Incorporating oats into your diet is a great way to stay healthy and energised but did you know that you can also incorporate oats into your beauty regime? The summer season tends to bring along late nights and lots of sun. These things are great but can leave your skin asking for a little more attention so why not dig around your cabinet at home to try out a DIY oat mask?

Oats does wonders for your skin and hair. They are known to have anti-inflammatory, cleansing and antioxidant properties that leave your skin soft by reducing any itchy or inflamed skin. By applying it to your hair it can soften your hair and scalp which reduces dandruff. It is also good for oily hair types because oats can absorb those extra unwanted oils.

There is several ways to make DIY masks and scrubs out of oats. Here’s a few examples:

 Combination / Oily skin

  • Oatmeal (cooked)* – ¼ cup
  • Honey – 1 tablespoon
  • Plain yogurt – 2 to 3 tablespoons

Mix ingredients together in a bowl. Apply evenly on clean face for approximately 5-10 minutes. Rinse off with warm water. 

Dry skin

  • Lemon juice – 1 teaspoon
  • Oatmeal* – 2 tablespoons
  • Honey – 1tablespoon

Mix ingredients together in a bowl. Apply evenly on clean face for approximately 5-10 minutes. Rinse off with warm water. 

Hair mask:

  • 3 table spoons of plain oats*
  • ½ cup of milk
  • 1 table spoon of Coconut Oil
  • 1 table spoon of Honey

Mix ingredients together in a bowl. Apply to hair concentrating on roots and dry ends. Leave on hair for approximately 10-20 minutes. Rinse off thoroughly then wash hair normally.

Knowing your skin types and allergies is important in getting the best results. 

*You can use whole oats but for a softer alternative you can grind them or blend them into a more powdery substance. This is less harsh if you use it on your face, in some cases you can even cook into porridge for an even softer alternative.
